Dan Scannell
I grew up in Somerset county NJ. Went to Penn State, first Erie campus, which had a killer trail system, then the State College campus, which had a killer beer system.
I lived in Astoria for a bunch of years, working in book publishing in midtown (Random House).
A job opportunity at Apple surprised me into being willing to cross the country. Losing the subway made me buy a (crappy) bicycle to commute. Then I went deep down the roadie rabbit hole.
I started riding with the club in 2017, then broke my collar bone during the Guns of August ride. Got back into shape, did the 2018 edition, flatted out at the very end, which got me super frustrated with the technical details. Then pandemic. Then the craving to ride fast with people returned. Stumbled into the Ben era of getting serious about being a racing team. Love it.
Re metal shows:
One of my favorite things to do is dedicate a weekend to cycling up to SF/Oakland/Berkeley from Campbell, getting a hotel room, getting bruised in the pit at a heavy metal show (doom, death, hardcore, etc), then cycling home the next day. That's what got me back into shape after avoiding cycling during the pandemic.
